Prizren was the craft, trade and diplomatic center of the entire region, and in the Middle Ages the imperial capital of Nemanji\u0107. It was here that caravans passed from Europe to Asia Minor, and vice versa. They often came from Dubrovnik, who made Prizren the trading capital of that time.
Around 1214, during the reign of Stefan Nemanji\u0107, the city belonged to the Serbian medieval state and became an economic and spiritual center. During the reign of King Milutin, Prizren became the most important trading center in Serbia. The city on the Bistrica River grew economically stronger, especially during the reigns of King Milutin, Emperor Du\u0161an and Emperor Uro\u0161. The most important historical monuments of Serbian medieval heritage from that period are the Church of the Virgin Mary of Ljevi\u0161 and the nearby monastery complex of the Holy Archangels, an endowment of Emperor Du\u0161an. At times, Prizren was also the capital of Emperors Du\u0161an and Uro\u0161. The medieval Prizren population was diverse and the majority at that time consisted of Serbs, but there were also Dubrovnik, Korcula, split, Zadar, Vlachs, Venetians, Greeks, SAS and others. They lived in colonies. The largest colony was formed by The Dubrovnik people. Travel writers of that time called Prizren \"the Imperial City\", and in folk epic poems it is listed as \"Serbian Constantinople\".<\/em><\/div>
